I think that depends on the car. Mine has 6 which may or may not be necessary. Definitely helps fuel economy on the highway.

When you get up to 7+ in an automatic I feel you're approaching cvt territory

I'd say 3 to 6 is right on. Beyond that you are either getting carried away or compensating for something.

Someone who is that concerned with fuel economy can take the damn bus and not have to worry about it or accept the fact they will always contribute to emission problems. This is what always annoys me about the green happy people. I understand where you are coming from, yes it is something we need to be wary of. But your hybrid runs of electricity that was probably generated by coal plants.
